To kick things off, the playlist starts with two familiar faces and the one unmistakable sound of Disclosure. One of their songs always finds its way through my headphones or Jambox each day. Pharrell makes an appearance in both tracks, one a sample from his feature in Robin Thicke’s “Wanna Love You Girl”, the other a remix of his own classic “Frontin”.
The vocals in the next two are what got them in this playlist. The first, by French house duo Cherokee, following a grooving house track by San Francisco native Miguel Migs. San Francisco has yet to disappoint me in with its taste, love, and appreciation for good House music.
The next two tracks pay homage to the sounds I heard growing up, soul, r&b, jazz, “oldies”, mixed with the house & techno sounds I now love. The producer of the track, French Kiwi Juice, or FKJ said “ I just loved the original song for its groove & its lyrics and I wanted to put a bit of my flavor on it”. What he says he threw together in a few hours turned out to be a quality remake of a well known classic.
Chris Count puts a much deeper tribal house touch on Al Green’s “Love and Happiness”, with the outcome sure to be rocking dance floors all over Ibiza this summer.
The playlist closes with tracks by two artist I saw live recently here in San Francisco. Both dj’s performed at Public Works, an art gallery turned club at night boasting the iconic Funktion One sound system. For those who aren’t familiar with Funktion One, they produce arguably the best sounding speakers in the world at the moment.
Hot Since 82 packed the house for an extended set that went well into 4am, dropping plenty of his known tracks but kept us guessing with plenty of unreleased material.
Next is Philadelphia native Josh Wink, known for producing and always playing the most unique experimental and always danceable sounds of music out there. Shortly before the show, news broke he would be recording his set to feature live on Sirius XM’s Electric Area for his Profound Sounds radio show. The track I picked by him keeps up with the old school trend but goes to show how versatile Josh Wink can be.
