Chicago brand MISANTHROPE and DC designer ZAIRE STUDIO joined forces this past weekend to showcase their Spring collections and welcome in the season. Hosted at Redeem — an independent boutique specializing in up-and-coming designers, and with ambience by DJ NativeSUN, designers Ayrun Dismuke and DC’s own Ayana Zaire shared what inspires their creative process through their showcase.
MISANTHROPE clothing, founded by Ayrun, is designed around a freedom of visual expression that embraces the imperfections of life, defies judgment and captures the impossible. Ayrun’s 15 years of brand and account management, includes stints with Red Wing Shoes and other top US Made brands and relationships with top retailers; Barney’s. Misanthrope was stylistically born of the idea of free thought with a disregard for boundaries or consequences. This US based Men’s collection, is influenced by the avant-garde silhouettes of high fashion and infused with a dark tone. Misanthrope lives at the intersection of timeless substance and ambitious authenticity.
Ayana launched ZAIRE, as a studio specializing in the craft of inspiring conversation through clothing, journalism, technology, and visual art. A Halcyon Fellow from the 2016 Studios Program, her individual art practice consists of the eponymous clothing line, AYANA ZAIRE, which communicates sentiments surrounding class, race, gender, and sexuality. In the spirit of using the human body as a “canvas,” she creates political art that lives on the body thus existing in parties, parks, or public transit and not solely in museums, galleries, or academic institutions. Additionally, Ayana collaborate with local brands to help them innovatively reiterate their creative vision to their ideal community.
As the fashion industry experiences a moment of serious disruption — opportunity is rife for agile companies and brands like Misanthrope and Zaire, who are tackling the accompanying business challenges in creative ways, while inspiring people within and beyond their industries. Continuing to partner with retail shop’s like Redeem, who support unsung brands and offer products that are interesting, unique and fun, definitely speaks to the range of cutting edge future-of-fashion enterprises.
